UM changes logo, hurricane distracted by flashy bikes

Today is Flag Day in the United States. Yah, flag!

On a semi-related note, the Miami New Times reported that my alma matta, the University of Miami has adopted a new focus group approved school logo to replace what MNT calls the “boring green thing” the school previously used.

The Hurricane had better things to cover – new UM themed scooters in the bookstore! They’re only $1,995! Hurry, limited time offer, financing available for qualified buyers!

Least convincing quote of the week

I have absolutely no plans on leaving. Of course, I serve at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees, but I have no desire to leave .”

– University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala on being passed up for a job in Obama's cabinet (quoted in The Miami Hurricane)

Political apathy redux

The election is over, but as this week's Hurricane writes its the campus political groups that suffer. Their membership renewal rates have fallen as much as 50% since last semester. Both groups plan hosting individual events through the remainder of the semester along with a larger bi-partisan event later in the semester.

Not only that, but the paper is also reporting that there is only one platform running for SG this year.

Also suffering is the university's pocketbook – so much so that President Shalala recently presented a new collegiate contingency plan meant to keep the university stay afloat for the next two years. Didn't they just finish a 3.5BILLION DOLLAR fundraiser not that long ago?

On a happier note: the UM archaeological site at Little Salt Spring recently recieved a grant for $10,0000.

UM – not DC – center of inaugural universe

The Miami Hurricane is reporting that the UC lounge was “ overflowing ” with spectators when Barack Obama was being inaugurated on Tuesday. Oh come on, is it really that hard for the UC lounge to be overflowing? What does it hold a 100 people?

Probably the most surprising statement about the event (a combined celebration of MLK day ) was this: “ President Shalala received a commemorative gift basket as well as claiming a first row seat at the inaugural watch party along with some colleagues .” Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Speaking of mighty, the Hurricane revealed that the first female mayor of Coral Gables is a UM alumni. Maybe now the university can get some respect from its host town.

Meanwhile, the university was also host to the Global Business Forum last week with speakers from Coca-Cola, McDonalds and Fed-Ex. Politics and business on the same campus proving once again that UM – not DC – is the center of the inaugural universe.
